Design and heritage experts have backed plans for a striking modernist extension to a grade A listed 16th century merchant’s house near Edinburgh, despite local authority concerns. The Leith scheme, by Highland Housing Fair masterplanner Caddell2, working with Wiszniewski Thomson Architects, involves the redevelopment and expansion of Lamb’s House — which dates from the time of Mary Queen of Scots — to provide apartments and new office space. Edinburgh City Council planners have claimed the concrete, steel and oak extension is over-complex and impedes views of its historic neighbour.

As part of the RSA 182nd Annual Exhibition, Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects have been awarded the RSA Medal for Architecture for the South West Community Health Care Partnership (SWCHC) Headquarters Building in Glasgow. Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects are recognised for projects across Scotland, and more recently Europe, which are both thoughtful and thought provoking. In the ten years Gordon and Alan have been together, the practice has won over thirty national and international architecture awards.

New campus for University of Paisley by RMJM

New campus for University of Paisley by RMJM
An outline planning application has been submitted for the University of Paisley’s proposed flagship new-build development at its campus in Ayr. RMJM has designed the masterplan for the £75m University campus, and is now working on detailed plans for submission in 2008. The visualisations represent the overall outline planning application lodged for planning approval. The detailed planning application, due to be lodged in early 2008 will feature further detail. Through a merger with Bell College this year, the University of Paisley has created Scotland’s largest modern university; with over 18,000 students and 4 campuses in the West of Scotland. As part of the development, RMJM has been working with the University to create the new Ayr campus, which will sit within the Craigie estate parkland. More
